Top 5 LEGO Sets of 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on a year of incredible creativity, design, and innovation from LEGO. This year has delivered some truly spectacular sets that pay homage to history, explore cultural significance, and push the boundaries of LEGO’s craftsmanship. In this blog, I’m thrilled to share my Top 5 LEGO Sets of 2024—each one a masterpiece in its own right.

Quick note: This list does not include any Star Wars sets, as I don’t feel qualified to judge them fairly. That said, if you’re a Star Wars fan, let me know in the comments which sets you think deserved a spot!

Number 5: The Auspicious Dragon

One of 2024’s earliest releases, the Auspicious Dragon earns its place with intricate design and rich cultural significance. Its golden accents, teal and orange tones, and unique light-orange spikes make it a stunning display piece. Highlights include printed Nexo Knight shield pieces adding texture to the sides and a bold red underside, likely symbolising the dragon’s heart.

Though visually striking, the set has some flaws—like underwhelming feet and visible Technic pins. However, details like the articulated head, tail, and jaw, as well as the symbolic pearl in one foot, make it a rewarding build. The dragon’s rocky, water-like base adds a sense of movement and depth, enhanced by translucent blue and white elements.

With advanced building techniques and a focus on cultural storytelling, this set is a phenomenal collectible.

Number 4: Family Reunion Celebration

Capturing the essence of a traditional Yamcha restaurant, the Family Reunion Celebration is an architectural and cultural delight. The modular build allows you to explore every detail, from the festive green, tan, and red facade to the intricate interior.

The set includes a flower shop, a mandarin tree, and even a peach stand, adding charm to the street setting. Inside the restaurant, celebratory Chinese phrases and a goldfish tank create an inviting atmosphere. The dining area features a Lazy Susan, chopsticks, and printed food tiles for an authentic touch.

With 13 minifigures bringing life to this festive scene, the Family Reunion Celebration is both a stunning display piece and a vibrant tribute to tradition.

Number 3: Notre-Dame Cathedral

Released alongside the Paris Olympics, this set is a breathtaking tribute to one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. The Notre-Dame Cathedral captures the Gothic beauty of its real-life counterpart with exceptional detail.

From the intricate flying buttresses to the stunning rose windows crafted with hubcap elements, this build showcases LEGO’s architectural prowess. The set mirrors the cathedral’s historical construction, starting from the east end and working toward the towers.

Though the interior isn’t highly visible when complete, the detailed exterior, including water channels and gargoyles, makes this micro-scale model a dream for LEGO Architecture enthusiasts.

Number 2: Botanical Garden

A marvel of design and creativity, the LEGO Botanical Garden stands out with its Victorian-inspired greenhouse, lush vegetation, and intricate modular elements.

The greenhouse features sand-green frames and clear panels, while the surrounding garden bursts with vibrant flower beds, wildlife, and a central fountain. Inside, eucalyptus and date palm trees accompany detailed plant builds, labeled with educational plaques.

The set’s elegant Victorian staircase and charming balcony add architectural flair, while 12 unique minifigures bring the garden to life. A perfect blend of beauty and functionality, the Botanical Garden is a standout set for both city builders and collectors.

Number 1: The Endurance

Topping the list is the LEGO Endurance—a ship model that combines historical significance with outstanding design. Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition, the set pays homage to the ship that braved the polar ice.

The curved hull, reinforced with unique bricks, is a visual masterpiece. Details like lifeboats, skeleton-leg anchors, and Shackleton’s cabin add depth and authenticity. The ship’s sails, crafted with Technic frames, are both flexible and historically accurate.

While some elements, like the static body and non-functional propeller, limit playability, the Endurance shines as a display piece. Its attention to detail and historical storytelling make it a worthy number one.
